News Article

This week, students had to compose a news article about the Myers-Briggs personality test that they took. Here is one student's example.

Do You Know Yourself?

Do you know yourself? If not, that's a problem. I took an online test to know my personality on Thursday, July 10th. The website is named similarminds.com. The test is about background personality. I took the test by reading and answering forty-eight questions about me. The result of the test was my personality profile, which is ENTP. The letter "E" stands for extroverted, "N" stands for intuitive, "T" stands for thinking, and "P" stands for perceiving.

According to www.typelogic.com, ENTP is clever. The person who is an ENTP has a strange sense of humor and enjoys playing devil's advocate. I think I have a sense of humor, but I don't think I play devil's advocate. It also said ENTPs are "good at solving problems, both at work and at home. ENTPs are very fond of physical and intellectual work, but they tend to tire of these quickly." ENTPs are basically optimists, and I am an optimistic person. In terms of the relationship with others, "ENTPs are good at acquiring friends who are clever as they are," but I don't think so. I just want to make friends with all the people I like.

At last, I think the profile ENTP fits me a lot. Doing the test to know my personality was a lot of fun. It can help me to know myself better.

Longer Enneagram Personality Test

If you were not satisfied with your enneagram results, click here to take the longer test. Be warned--this test has 131 items to answer. Extra help, one item says "I believe in od." It's supposed to say "I believe in God."

You should be familiar with some of the vocabulary already. I recommend that you preview the items so you better understand them. Then you can take the test.

As for me, I am more satisfied with my results of the longer test, in which I scored as a one. I do not believe I am a three, which I scored in the shorter test.

Homework for Monday

Complete the second half (#11-#17) of the vocabulary quiz. If you were absent from class on Thursday, you can download that quiz here.

Choose one of the following three topics to write about for Final Essay #2
  1. Do you believe personality tests accurately describe people? Why or why not?
  2. Do you think personality tests help or harm people? Choose one and explain why.
  3. Is it important to know more about your personality through testing? Why or why not?
After you have chosen the topic that you want to write about, make a list of 10-20 ideas that support your opinion. If you were absent from class, please read the green boxes on page 105-106 to learn how to write an opinion essay.

Reaction Paper to Analytical Psychology

Today students turned in a summary and a reaction to an article concerning analytical psychology. Ai wrote a reaction that really got my attention.

This article was quite hard for me to read. There was a lot of jargon in this article. Some of the words are not in my dictionary, so it was hard for me to understand all of them. However, this kind of topic is very interesting for me. Actually I studied about Jung in high school, but it was very difficult to study, even in Japanese.

In the "synchronicity" paragraph, the author said, "Dreams thus can allude to future events as well as to past events." I agree with the point that dreams are affected by past events, but I think future events and dreams are not relevant. If future events and dreams have some relationship, it is not science any more. I realized that half of psychology is science, but the rest is not.

Western & Chinese Astrology

On Monday, July 7th, students turned in their final draft of their first formal essay of the semester. Here are two student examples from Yu-Ching (Kimmy) and Jumpei.

Chinese Astrology & Western Astrology
by Yu-Ching Yen

When I was a child, my parents told me that I was a Dog according to Chinese astrology. While I was in university, I learned about Western astrology and found out that I was a Gemini. Today I will analyze both Chinese and Western astrology. First, I figured out that there are several differences between the Dog and Gemini. Second, I also found out that the Dog and Gemini have some similarities. It was only after I compared and contrasted the Dog with Gemini that I finally realized that my personality was a combination of the two.

First of all, it is interesting that Gemini sometimes has "a bit lacking in responsibility;" on the other hand, the Dog "has a strong sense of duty and responsibility." Another difference is that Gemini can "be somewhat childish in demeanor and may sometimes annoy others" whereas "the Dog is sensitive to others and empathizes with them." These are some opposite personality traits between the Dog and Gemini.

Secondly, Gemini and the Dog also have some similarities. For example, "the Dog has pessimistic thoughts. Dogs think about situations beyond their control, such as natural or human disasters." Likewise "Gemini sometimes defaults to a more positive mental state." In addition, "Gemini is rather curious and inquisitive by nature." Similarly "the Dog has a strong curiosity." When Dogs are told a story or hear of an event, they need to know all the facts.

In conclusion, after comparing and contrasting between the two kinds of astrology, I think that I possess different traits from both of them. For example, I am "in charge of and am sensitive to something I am interested in." In contrast, "I don't care about other things I don't like." I also see eye to eye with the similarities of Gemini and the Dog. That's why I figured out that I am like both of them.

Comparison and Contrast of My Astrology
by Jumpei Takegawa

People usually have a Chinese horoscope and a Western horoscope. They may not only have the same dispositions, but also different ones because Chinese astrology is decided by every year in a twelve-year cycle. Therefore, it's different from Western astrology, which is decided by one's birth month. Accordingly, I cannot believe both of the them. I will introduce some examples about the the consistent and inconsistent cases.

Firstly, I will explain the similarities between my signs of both astrology, the Ox and Virgo. The Ox is quiet and steady, and Virgo shows conscientiousness. The Ox has a disposition of being steady; so similarly, Virgo may indicate conservative conscientiousness. Moreover, the Ox has a logical mind, which helps me to be conscientious.

Secondly, in contrast to the previous paragraph, I will explain my opposite case. If Virgo's character is conscientious, that implies diligence. Unlike the former case, it may occur in contradiction to the Ox's character, which is steady because extreme diligence may not be steady. Furthermore, the Ox has a hot-headed character. If this trait is exhibited, Virgo's character will not maintain its levelheaded nature.

To sum up, there are some conflicts between Chinese and Western astrology. Although they may have similar factors, they have equally different factors. Thus, it's difficult to believe them.
